Welcome to Jamaica
The island of Jamaica is a paradise famous for its colorful culture and tourism. This tropical island surges with wildlife, beautiful beaches, and lush, forested landscapes which is a frequent get away for adventuresome travelers. The people of Jamaica have a strong sense of heritage and community. They also have created some irresistible cultural cuisine.
Probably the most popular of Jamaican dishes is Jerk. A combination of spices and herbs, Jerk is a fiery dry rub marinade that is generously put on chicken, pork, or fish. The meat is then grilled to give it a sweet, smoky flavor that packs a spicy punch. You can often find Jerk shacks on the side of the road, which offer Jamaica’s visitors a quick bite when on the go.
Since Jamaica is a tropical island, there are many delicious fruits that thrive in the warm climate. These include mangoes, sweetsops, guineps, naseberries, otaheite apples, ortaniques, and a widely eaten tree grown fruit called ackee. Ackee is a unique fruit, in that when prepared, it has a resemblance to sweet, soft, scrambled eggs! Tradionally, Jamaicans eat the prepared ackee with salted cod for a delicious breakfast.
Another unique Jamaican dish is actually a variation of beans and rice, that Jamaicans call peas and rice. The word pea in Jamaica actually refers to what we know as beans. When they prepare their peas and rice, they typically cook the peas in coconut milk, giving the dish a characteristic Caribbean flavor.
Here are some of the many delicious foods you might find on the warm Jamaican island:
