Why do chefs need to learn how to write?

Chefs do more than sauté onions, fry potatoes, and bake cakes and breads. They may own or manage restaurants, work for corporations doing research and development, or even have their own consulting businesses. Today’s chefs need to communicate with many different types of people for many different reasons.

An important way to communicate is through writing. Chefs may need to write letters to companies that deliver the food and supplies to their restaurants, or they may have to write memos to their staffs. Some chefs write articles for magazines while others create books about cooking or working in the foodservice industry.

For their written communication to be successful, chefs must know the basics of English grammar. They must be familiar with how to write paragraphs that contain lots of important details and clear information. Missing details and confusing information can wind up costing a chef or business money.

At The Culinary Institute of America, we realize it’s important to teach solid writing skills to future chefs. Writing is one of the first classes for students enrolled in the Culinary Arts and in the Baking and Pastry Arts programs. Students also have writing assignments for other classes—even in mathematics, where they must keep a journal!

Clear, concise, grammatically correct writing is, indeed, one of the most important skills a chef can have.
